Characterization of Stream Temperature Data Sites

 

Each temperature logger deployment site has a unique set of characteristics that determine how the stream temperature responds to solar and atmospheric heat flux on any given day:  Shade – vegetative and topographic, channel composition, aspect, groundwater temperature,  solar path (affecting shade length and orientation),  groundwater/surface water ratio and water column depth.

The atmospheric variability can be reduced by selecting data from summer days that are cloudless.  This condition typically occurs frequently within the Umpqua Basis and often persists for several days providing consistent  atmospheric conditions.

The effect of the solar path can be reduced by selecting data on or near the same date each year.  Experience suggests that changes in the height of the water column may be negligible – .
